Ecosia Search Engine, A Scam or Legit?

What is Ecosia about

The reason why you are reading this post is probably because you ran into Ecosia, and you would like to know if it’s legit, is Ecosia scam, what is Ecosia, etc. I’m here to show you my insight on Ecosia and give you those answers! (and after that, please check the rest of my website for more interesting stuff, Thanks!) is nothing more than a search engine and that’s also why it’s called Ecosia search engine. I tried it and found it very easy to use. It’s not much different than Google, but there is one BIG difference. When you search the web with Ecosia, 80% of the profits from the search ad revenue goes to support tree planting programs.

By planting a tree, you can fight climate change, restart water cycles, turn deserts back into fertile forests and provide nutrition, employment, education, medical assistance and political as well as economic stability.

So basically Ecosia is a search engine you can use, and by using it you give a hand to help the nature, and the economy in some very poor countries.

How does Ecosia work

So another question that probably pops up in your head is, Where does Ecosia get the money to plant those trees? Just because I search something on the internet they make money? Then why don’t we do such thing? If you want to, you absolutely can, and you can do it for nothing, Free. Read to the end of my post, but first, ECOSIA.

This is how they say they do it:

So basically, they say that they earn money by ads they put on their search pages. They get paid to put those ads on their pages, and when someone clicks on them they get paid.

Is Ecosia legit

Is ecosia scam ? I strongly doubt it. Why would it be? I mean, you don’t loose anything and the Ecosia search engine works just like it should. I even find it very easy to use. And if it isn’t for that, they publish monthly receipts and business reports about what they’re doing and where their money goes to.

Should I use Ecosia?

Well.. I have another question for you: Why not…?

And like I promised you: I was going to tell you how You, can earn money online, and how you can start for free. Check my Getting Started page or click here.

The only thing I have to say to “Why not?” is that you can no longer easily access your Google account’s notifications in the corner of main search page. But it’s not that big of a deal, so yeah. Also, I am wondering if it bases its advertisements and search results on our internet history, just like Google does, or if it just gives the most popular. These are not big things, but just my thoughts. This is pretty exciting, and I think I am going to try it!

    • That’s true, But I don’t access my google-account that much.. And yeah most likely.. That’s more intetesting for them since we get to see advertisement about “our interests” so..

I contributed to planting more than a 100 trees already! It feels really great

    • Grace

Well you can bookmark your google accounts on the top bar!! Goes right too it and doesn’t waste anytime. Ecosia is great!

lose* just helping with a typo 😀
I’m glad you point out that they are transpaarent with their accounting, it’s all I needed to see!

    • LoL! Everyone makes a typo once in a while

That’s why I’m using it. It doesn’t change anything for me and it helps the world and it’s nature.

  3. Larathus

I’m using it right now but I don’t really know if they are actually planting trees. The could been just keeping the money for themselves. In that case, I could been using DuckDuckGo, a searcher I also want to help.

  4. Skeptic

Ecosia shows that its powered by Bing… is this just a Microsoft tool? Also, Google has built in features that dont seem to be replicated in Ecosia such as if you google a currency to exchange it will give you the result or if you search for a politician it will pull up bio data from Wikipedia to give you a quick and concise breakdown

    • I don’t think it’s a microsoft tool since it’s a website (search engine). And yes indeed, the features that google has are not integrated in the Ecosia Search Engine. But in my opinion, that is not really stuff you look up every day, so in other words that’s not so important.

If that is the case, then Google would be better to use as your standard search engine. It’s just a matter of contributing to the nature.

I want to like Ecosia, but when I double check the results with Google I pretty much always find more accurate and relevant results than Ecosia. As much as I like trees they maybe need to focus more on this side of the business first. Information is ammunition these days and if all the right-on hippies are using impractical information we’re lost.

    • I do agree with you, Jake. That’s why I think that this search engine is more suited for people who don’t look up things that are too specific, like kids who have to do some work for school for example, or for parents who just like to check their mail and book their vacations. But if you’re an online marketeer, I advice you to use google or bing instead.

It’s just that I’m happy that there are still some people doing things for the nature. In nature you can find many cures and benefits for people with exotic diseases. But enough about that. I would like to invite you to check out my updated review about WA, check it out here.

if they get more people to use ecosia, maybe then they’ll be able to upgrade. so I think I’ll go with them. the other choice was duckduckgo but I don’t know what to believe about them.

  7. Claire Janezic

I use Ecosia, but sometimes switch over to Google if I need a more specific search. For most things, Ecosia is adequate, and it’s very much worth using. It only takes about 5 seconds to switch over to Google, so I don’t see lack of specific Google functions as much of a loss.

  8. Chris Noton

One question – does Ecosia save your search terms to your computer or are they deleted as soon as you exit the site? I prefer an anonymous and secure search engine like DDG but I can’t find any information about this. Any advice welcomed.

    • Hey Chris, They are saved in your history tab but I’m not sure if that data is put on the computer. If you use google Chrome you could do the following:

      1. Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
      2. Select Settings.
      3. Click Show advanced settings.
      4. In the “Privacy” section, click the Content settings button.
      5. In the “Cookies” section, mark “Keep cookies and site data by default until you quit your browser”.
      6. Save the changes.

That’s for the cookies and cache.

And your history can be deleted automatically with this extension.

      I hope this helps, Chris!

  9. If it’s less advanced than google, which it most likely is, then that’s even better. Less tracking, less surveillance. As awesome as google is, it’s very spylike. I’ve switched to ecosia, let’s see how I get on. Why not plant some trees when you can do it without leaving your house, right? 🙂

    • It is somewhat less advanced than Google. You don’t really see much of a difference, you get to see a beautiful picture instead of “Google” which might be more interesting to look at. And like you said, Why not plant some trees when you do it without leaving the house! Lol

i love ecosia! it feels lovely to be helping the environment from just browsing the internet, such a simple task that can make a huge difference! yes, it doesn’t have as many features as google, but i think that, obviously depending on what you use the internet for, doesn’t effect anyone drastically if they do not have said features.

  11. Antoinette

I’ve been using Ecosia for bit now- I have ‘planted’ 113 trees now, but I’ve realised something. Every single time I use it, its ALWAYS on 25,000,000 trees planted (not exactly that- like, it could be 25,138,728 or like 25,362,837, ect.). I’ve started having doubts about it, but I’ll still use it anyways, just incase it is actually real, and my ecosia search engine is just strange.

    • Hey Antoinette, How great is that! 113 trees!

And about the numbers.. I remember when it was way less, and not such a long time ago it was 24,OOO,OOO and a bit.. But I’ll keep an Eye on it just in case. And make sure you check out my latest article about the #1 Websitebuilder I know!
